Ferreira joy at show of strength

FC Porto coach Jesualdo Ferreira lauded his side's "strength and effectiveness" after a 4-1 win against SV Hamburger moved them into contension in Group G.

FC Porto coach Jesualdo Ferreira applauded his side for being "strong and effective" as Lisandro López scored twice in a 4-1 victory against SV Hamburger to lift the Portuguese side into contention in UEFA Champions League Group G.

Jesualdo Ferreira, Porto coach
We were strong and effective and took our opportunities, unlike against [PFC] CSKA [Moskva]. Tonight we were brighter and my only disappointment is that we conceded in the final minute. We deserved it. The players were tactically astute and did what I asked of them. It was a very important win and I must thank Porto's fans who turned out tonight despite the terrible weather. We are making progress and could even improve in the future.

Thomas Doll, Hamburg coach
We are obviously disappointed as our 'final' has ended in the worst possible way. We have no excuses for our poor performance. After the first goal we had to throw caution to the wind and attack but then the second went in and it became an uphill struggle. After that Porto had a lot of space to play and we failed to respond which you can't do in the Champions League. Three matches into the group stage and we've been easily beaten by all of them. We cannot be competitive in the Champions League without changing the way we play.

Ricardo Quaresma, Porto winger
This was our best performance of the season. We started well and played as a team. We have enough quality to keep it going in this manner and that's what we need.
