Masters of their destiny

Holders AC Milan are among the nine teams who will be guaranteed a place in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League if they achieve victories this week.

English pair through
The Rossoneri can follow Arsenal FC and Manchester United FC into the first knockout round with a victory at SL Benfica on Wednesday, although a draw would suffice if there was a winner in the other Group D game between Celtic FC and FC Shakhtar Donetsk. Also masters of their destiny on Wednesday night are Chelsea FC, FC Porto and Real Madrid CF.

Porto visit Liverpool
In Group A Porto need only a draw at Liverpool FC, while in Group B Chelsea can guarantee their continued involvement by winning at Rosenborg BK. Madrid will progress once again with a draw at Werder Bremen, and would be joined by S.S. Lazio or Olympiacos CFP should one of them triumph in Rome.

Barcelona need point
Matchday 5 opens 24 hours earlier with the penultimate fixtures in Groups E to H. Group E leaders Barcelona need just a point at Olympique Lyonnais, while a victory at FC Dynamo Kyiv will carry Roma through in Group F. The Italian side could advance with less so long as they match Sporting Clube de Portugal's result at Old Trafford.

Duo eye firsts
Fenerbahçe SK are guaranteed a first UEFA Champions League last-16 place if they complete an unlikely double against FC Internazionale Milano, yet the hosts and Group G leaders have the same incentive for victory themselves. A draw would take both teams through should PSV Eindhoven fail to win at PFC CSKA Moskva. In Group H, Sevilla FC can prolong their maiden campaign by beating Arsenal, who guaranteed progress on Matchday 4, but they could even lose and advance if third-placed SK Slavia Praha failed to win at FC Steaua Bucureşti.

Win or bust
Other teams can progress, though in their cases they require other results to go their way: Olympique de Marseille (Group A), Rosenborg (Group B), Lazio and Olympiacos (Group C), Celtic and Shakhtar (Group D) and Rangers FC (Group E). At the same time, fully 14 teams risk elimination, notably Beşiktaş JK, Slavia and Valencia CF for whom it is now win or bust.
