Sivok sure Black Eagles will soar

It proved an unhappy return to the UEFA Champions League for Beşiktaş JK but despite losing 1-0 to Manchester United FC, centre-back Tomáš Sivok insists there is still everything to play for in Group B.

It proved an unhappy return to the UEFA Champions League for Beşiktaş JK but despite losing 1-0 to Manchester United FC, centre-back Tomáš Sivok insists there is still everything to play for in Group B.

Scholes winner

The Black Eagles kicked off their previous campaign in Europe's premier club competition, in 2007/08, with defeat at Olympique de Marseille, and this time round it was Paul Scholes who did the damage, the 34-year-old heading in the only goal of the game with 13 minutes to play. Beşiktaş have now failed to score in their past four matches, but Sivok, who successfully man-marked Wayne Rooney until his 63rd-minute substitution, feels his side's fortunes will improve.

'Unlucky'

"We were very, very unlucky again," the 26-year-old Czech international told uefa.com. "Manchester United had two chances and scored once. I hope we will win the next match. We know they are one of the best teams on the road. We kept them out well at the back and made some fast breaks, but just could not score. We know Manchester United are the favourites to win the group so we must win against CSKA and Wolfsburg. I think we still have a chance to qualify for the next round."

Amazing atmosphere
Sivok described the atmosphere generated by the 33,000 fans at the Inönü Stadium in Istanbul as "really amazing", a thought echoed by United goalkeeper Ben Foster. "Deafening," said the 26-year-old, who was playing in his second match at this level. "I don't think I've played in an atmosphere like that. The gaffer told us it was going to be something you've probably never played in front of before, and he was right, it was hard to play with. I don't know how many fans were there, but there was a point in the second half when the fans were sort of chanting, and I couldn't hear myself think, it was that loud – I've never experienced anything like that before."

CSKA test
Rodrigo Tello, who came on for Rodrigo Tabata in the 66th-minute, knows his side can ill afford another slip at PFC CSKA Moskva in their next match on 30 September. "We played well up to Scholes's goal," he said. "I don't think Manchester United came here for a draw. Their style is always same – they command the game – and that's why we played on the counterattack. Winning your home games is the most important in Champions League. Now we will go to Moscow to play CSKA. We knew they had lost [to Wolfsburg in the section's other match on Tuesday]. We will do our best and perhaps we have to go there to win."
