FC Zürich's momentous victory away to AC Milan has fired the belief that they can progress to the first knockout round, and they will be looking to put another three points on the board against an Olympique de Marseille side reeling after two defeats.

• OM lie bottom of Group C after following a 2-1 home loss to Milan with a 3-0 reverse at Real Madrid CF last time out. Zürich also tasted defeat at the hands of Madrid, going down 5-2 at home on Matchday 1, but they put that setback behind them at San Siro thanks to Hannu Tihinen's back-heeled goal.

Match background
• This is the second time Zürich have hosted a team from France in a competitive fixture having previously beaten Toulouse FC 2-0 at the Letzigrund stadium in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup group stage.

• Marseille are unbeaten in their last five meetings with Swiss opponents, since losing their first fixture against a side from Switzerland, a 2-0 defeat at FC Sion in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup second round.

• OM's reverse at the Santiago Bernabéu on Matchday 2 was their sixth successive away defeat in the UEFA Champions League proper since winning 1-0 at Liverpool FC in their first tie on the road in 2007/08.

• In addition to Zürich's Matchday 1 home defeat by Madrid, the Swiss titleholders also lost the home leg of their third qualifying round tie with NK Maribor, going down 3-2 before prevailing 3-0 in Slovenia. They beat FK Ventspils 2-1 at home in the play-offs.

Team ties
• Onyekachi Okonkwo and Bakari Koné both came on as substitutes as the Ivory Coast beat Nigeria 1-0 during the 2008 CAF Africa Cup of Nations group stage.

• While at Valencia CF, Fernando Morientes came up against FC Salzburg in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round second leg. Having lost 1-0 away, Morientes's strike helped fire the Liga outfit to a 3-1 aggregate success in the return. Johan Vonlanthen was a second-half substitute for Salzburg.

• Vonlanthen also faced Brandão, who was then at FC Shakhtar Donetsk, in a third qualifying round tie the following season. Brandão scored the decisive goal in a 3-2 aggregate triumph over Salzburg.
