Andriy Shevchenko's return to San Siro offers one tantalising renewal of acquaintances but the reunion of Real Madrid CF's Kaká and AC Milan may be the stand-out tie of Matchday 3.

European powerhouses
European champions 16 times between them, Madrid and Milan head into the first leg of their double-header on the back of contrasting results on Matchday 2. Manuel Pellegrini's side's serene progress continued with victory over Olympique de Marseille while Milan were the victims of the surprise of the competition thus far, going down 1-0 to FC Zürich.

Shevchenko returns
Zürich's fellow UEFA Champions League newcomers FC Rubin Kazan summoned up an equally admirable 1-1 draw against FC Internazionale Milano last month but the Russian champions's task becomes no easier on Tuesday when they travel to holders FC Barcelona. Inter's attempts to pick up a first Group F win continue with the visit of FC Dynamo Kyiv, home once more to Shevchenko, scorer of 14 goals against the Nerazzurri during his time at Milan.

Rangers mission
Gérard Houllier will be an interested observer as two of his former clubs, Liverpool FC – needing to bounce back from a 2-0 loss to ACF Fiorentina – and Olympique Lyonnais meet in Group E. Rangers FC will look for solace against FC Unirea Urziceni following a 4-1 defeat at home to Sevilla FC, while AZ Alkmaar and Olympiacos FC host Arsenal FC and R. Standard de Liège respectively in Group H.

Bordeaux dip
Manchester United FC seek their first win in six attempts against Russian opposition when they travel to PFC CSKA Moskva on Wednesday. Maccabi Haifa FC's uphill slog continues with a trip to Juventus, whose main Group A rivals FC Bayern München travel to a FC Girondins de Bordeaux side coming to terms with two consecutive Ligue 1 losses.

Chelsea losses
Olympique de Marseille will hope to profit domestically from Les Girondins' slip-up but must first turn their attentions to Milan's unlikely conquerors on Matchday 2, Zürich. Unexpected defeats by Wigan Athletic FC and Aston Villa FC tempered Chelsea FC's fine domestic start and Liga strugglers Club Atlético de Madrid will hope to do likewise in Group D when they visit Stamford Bridge. FC Porto play host to APOEL FC in that section's other fixture.
