Paulo Sousa is unstinting in his praise of Basel after they defeat Liverpool 1-0
Geoffroy Serey Die said "unity" was vital to Basel getting off the mark in the group
Brendan Rodgers says: "That was a very disappointing display from us"
Marco Streller struck seven minutes into the second half to earn Basel victory
Next games: Ludogorets v Basel, Liverpool v Real Madrid (22 October)

Geoffroy Serey Die, Basel midfielder
We can say [we do well against English teams]. It's really great to beat them at home and we hope it's going to continue.

I think that, regardless of the position you play, you have to speak to each other. And when there is unity, everything goes well. Today we were really united, we spoke to each other a lot, we were well positioned, and that paid off in the end.

[Compared with the loss to Real Madrid] First of all, it's not the same calibre of opponent. And you mustn't forget that it's an advantage to play at home. With the fans that we have, we want to give everything. The Real match went very badly – we've put that behind us now. Today things went well, we have to keep working and we'll see what happens.

Steller proud after Basel win

We don't think of [Ludogorets] as minnows as we have seen them play. They play good football. I think they have the same chances as us: 50-50. We're not going to underestimate them. We'll give everything. We'll do all we can to get points over there and we hope it'll go well.

Paulo Sousa, Basel coach
I'm very happy. It's a great win. I knew we needed a great performance from each individual player if we wanted to beat a team like Liverpool – and we did that. We defended well, played well and had chances to get more goals. We could have won by more … against Liverpool! Look at the players they have playing there.

We have given ourselves a huge amount of confidence with this success. It gives us a boost. We were proactive in the game and didn't just wait for them. That was decisive. Our fans gave us tremendous support. It was glorious, historic, for me, the players, the fans and the club.

Rodgers bemoans Liverpool loss

Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool manager
That was a very disappointing display from us. The first 25 minutes were bad, after that it was a little better. But then in the second half, above all at the start, it was very poor. And that's not acceptable. If you're playing in the Champions League, you cannot afford to play only in spells. The goal we conceded was particularly annoying – you cannot do that at this level, especially against such a strong opponent as Basel.

We defended passively and left Streller all alone in the middle. Basel were as good as we expected. They are a top team who have always done well against English teams. In spite of that, everything is still open. In such a group, you have to win your home games and we still have two of them, one of which is against Basel.

Steven Gerrard, Liverpool captain
We created a good few chances but we didn't deserve anything from the game. We were a bit soft all around the park and they wanted it more. We were second-best tonight. I don't think we were played off the park but we made it easy for them.
