Match background

PSV
• The Dutch champions are in the knockout rounds for the first time since 2006/07, when they went out to Liverpool FC in the quarter-finals, losing 3-0 at home and 1-0 away. In the round of 16 they defeated Arsenal FC 1-0 at home before a 1-1 away draw.

• In their 14th UEFA Champions League group stage campaign this season, they won all three home matches, beating Manchester United FC and PFC CSKA Moskva 2-1 and Wolfsburg 2-0 to finish second in Group B with ten points.

• PSV's 24 games against Spanish opponents have ended W4 D10 L10 (W4 D6 L2 at home – W0 D4 L8 in Spain).

• FC Barcelona are the only other Spanish side to have won at the PSV Stadion, prevailing 3-2 in the second leg of the 1995/96 UEFA Champions League quarter-final to complete a 5-4 aggregate triumph.

Atlético
• The 2014 runners-up were unbeaten in their three group away games, helping them reach 13 points to win Group C with a three-point margin over SL Benfica.

• Diego Simeone's side began their sixth group stage campaign with a 2-0 victory at Galatasaray AŞ, drew 0-0 at FC Astana and then won 2-1 at Benfica.

• Last season the Rojiblancos lost their round of 16 away leg 1-0 at Bayer 04 Leverkusen, eventually going through on penalties after the same score at home. They lost 1-0 at Real Madrid CF, and by the same aggregate score, in the quarter-final second leg.

• Atlético have lost all four two-legged ties they have contested with Dutch clubs and have an unhappy record in the Netherlands.

• They surrendered a 1-0 first-leg lead when going down 3-0 to AFC Ajax on their first visit to the Netherlands for a European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-final in 1970/71. Atleti lost twice at FC Groningen in the 1980s and when they did finally avoid defeat on Dutch soil, against Ajax in the 1996/97 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, they lost the return leg in Spain 3-2.

• Home and away, Atlético's record against Dutch opponents is: W5 D1 L4.

Coach and player links
