Final memories for Monaco and Porto

FC Porto can look back on their only previous contest against AS Monaco FC with considerable fondness as the teams come face to face again on matchday two.

• The Portuguese side were crowned European champions for the second time in 2004 with a 3-0 final victory over Monaco in Gelsenkirchen.

• This time round Porto need to recover from their 3-1 home loss to Beşiktaş JK on matchday one; Monaco drew 1-1 at debutants RB Leipzig in their first Group G game.

Previous meetings
• Their sole preceding encounter could not have been more high profile, as José Mourinho's Porto took on a Monaco team coached by Didier Deschamps in the 2004 final. Goals from Carlos Alberto (39), Deco (71) and Dmitri Alenichev (75) gave the Portuguese outfit the trophy for a second time, following their 1987 triumph.

• The line-ups at the Arena AufSchalke on 26 May 2004 were:

• Current coach Sérgio Conceição joined Porto from SS Lazio midway through 2003/04, but had already represented the Italian club in that season's UEFA Champions League and was therefore ineligible for European action.

• Monaco are unbeaten at home to Portuguese visitors, winning two games and drawing the other. Their most recent experience was a goalless home draw with SL Benfica in the 2014/15 group stage (0-1 away).

• The French side scored three goals in each of their other two matches against Portuguese opposition at the Stade Louis II: 3-2 against Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 1997/98 group stage (0-3 away) and 3-0 against CF Os Belenenses in the 1989/90 European Cup Winners' Cup first round (4-1 aggregate).

• Monaco's overall record against Portuguese teams is W2 D2 L3.

• Monaco are in their eighth group stage campaign. Finalists in 2004, they got to the semis in 1994, 1998 and 2017.

• The principality outfit had another memorable European season in 2016/17, knocking out Manchester City FC and Borussia Dortmund en route to the last four. There they succumbed 4-1 on aggregate to Juventus (0-2 home, 1-2 away).

• That Juve defeat ended a seven-match unbeaten home run (W6 D1) for Leonardo Jardim's men in European competition. They picked up seven points at home in the 2016/17 group stage.

• Monaco have lost two of their last 14 European home games (W9 D3).

• Porto's record against Ligue 1 clubs reads W12 D6 L5; in France it is W3 D4 L4.

• The Portuguese side's most recent visit to France brought a 1-0 win at LOSC Lille in the 2014/15 play-off first leg, Héctor Herrera getting the goal that stopped a four-match winless streak away to French teams (D2 L2). Porto also prevailed 2-0 at home, Yacine Brahimi opening the scoring.

• Porto have lost just one of their last seven games against French opposition, home and away (W4 D2).

• This is Porto's seventh successive group stage campaign and their record-equalling 22nd in total. In 2016/17, they reached the round of 16, bowing out against eventual runners-up Juventus (0-2 home, 0-1 away).

• Porto have lost their last three UEFA Champions League fixtures, home and away, and have won only one of the last five.

• Porto took four points away from home in last year's group stage.

• Last season was the third time in the last six campaigns that Porto have progressed from their group.

Coach and player links
• Jardim's Monaco beat an FC Nantes team coached by Conceição 4-0 in Ligue 1 on 5 March 2017, Fabinho scoring the last goal from the penalty spot.

• The coaches also crossed paths in Portugal. In April 2012, in his first season as a head coach, Conceição's SC Olhanense beat Jardim's SC Braga 2-1 in the Liga; in 2013/14, by then at A. Académica de Coimbra, Conceição recorded a win and a draw against Jardim's Sporting Clube de Portugal.

• Jardim's domestic record against Porto was W1 D1 L6. He had spells in charge of AD Camacha (2003–08), GD Chaves (2008–09), SC Beira-Mar (2009–11), Braga (2011/12) and Sporting (2013/14).

• Radamel Falcao scored 41 goals in 51 Portuguese Liga appearances for Porto between 2009 and 2011. He won the Portuguese Cup in 2010 and a league and cup double the next season, when he also spearheaded the club's UEFA Europa League triumph with 17 goals – including the winner in the final against Braga.

• João Moutinho was at Porto from 2010 to 2013, making 83 outings and scoring four goals. A UEFA Europa League winner alongside Falcao, he claimed the league title in each of his three seasons with the Dragons, completing a domestic double in 2010/11.

• Monaco's run of 16 top-flight wins – a Ligue 1 record – came to an end on 9 September as they went down 4-0 at OGC Nice. Jardim's team equalled the previous best sequence, the 14 successive victories managed by FC Girondins de Bordeaux in 2009, when they defeated Dijon FCO 4-1 on 13 August.

• Falcao has scored 12 goals in 11 appearances for club and country this season (11/7 in the league).

• Falcao has scored two goals or more in a game on four occasions this term, most recently registering twice in the 4-0 win at LOSC Lille on Friday 22 September.

• Danijel Subašić (foot) has not played since 9 September, but Thomas Lemar (hamstring) made his first appearance since 9 September as a substitute in Friday's win at LOSC Lille.

Porto
• Aboubakar and Maxi Pereira are available after each serving a one-game suspension on matchday one.

• Seeking their first league title since 2013, Porto have won their opening seven Liga fixtures of the season, conceding only three goals in the process.
