Ancelotti thrilled to 'do it for Real Madrid'

Carlo Ancelotti was extremely happy to fill the missing space in the Santiago Bernabéu trophy room, while Diego Simeone admitted Club Atlético de Madrid had "given our all".

2014 final highlights: Real Madrid 4-1 Atlético (AET)

Carlo Ancelotti, Madrid coach
I'm extremely happy, because we've managed to do it for Real Madrid and that's very important. All of us who've been working hard all season feel very proud of achieving this result, for all of Real Madrid. Personally I feel very happy; happiness is giving happiness to those that follow us day in, day out, all the time. Madrid fans are extremely happy and that's why we're happy too.

What was most difficult was to get the equaliser. We didn't have any space, Atlético defended very well, but we tried every way possible, right to the end – we managed to do it and then the game changed completely. The goal we scored gave us a lot of strength and after that perhaps we wanted the victory more.

I am lucky, but not for this game. You can say I'm a lucky man in the end, or you can say that we tried to do everything until the last second of the game. This is football – sometimes you have bad luck, sometimes good luck.

At half-time I said we had to play quicker and trust more in our offensive capabilities. I told the players the same after 90 minutes, to keep attacking, because we really created problems for them.

On my first day, when I went to the Santiago Bernabéu trophy room, I said to the president that there was one cup missing and that we should try to get it this season. We've managed to do that. I've felt a lot of trust in me from the whole of the club, and we've had the composure to win games.

All finals are very difficult and this was the same. The whole season was very tricky but it's been very good. It's our first year, we've tried to change our style and the group of players have been fantastic: always professional, always very willing. Marcelo wasn't happy not to start but when he did come on, he was one of the decisive players.

We've won the most important competition in the world. The season has been very long and after the semi-final with Bayern, perhaps our results haven't been as good, but I want to congratulate the players because they've been fantastic all year.

I spoke with [Simeone]. I congratulated him on winning the league before the game, and the same after the game. You have to respect a team that doesn't win but fights all the time. But I think in the end we deserved to win.

Diego Simeone, Atlético coach
You have to look at it overall – Madrid were better in the second half, they kept us in our half and we couldn't get out. Football is wonderful because of that. People say that winning is the most important thing, but the support we've had from people tells you there's another side to it. I told my players that, when you've played as well as they did tonight, to keep their heads up and start thinking about next season.

You can lose or you can win – this time it's our turn to lose and we know we've given it our all. People responded to what the team have done and that allows us to grow further and continue to compete.

It's not sadness, it's bitterness. I feel bitter that I didn't reach our objective. I wish I could have won the way I wanted, but I couldn't – though I can overcome this. I know that, once you've given your all, there's other players and another match. In life, and in football, you've got everything one day, then you've got nothing the next – you have to keep going.

It was my responsibility to have [Diego Costa] play and obviously I made a mistake because I had to switch him as early as I did; obviously he wasn't as good as he had been the day before. That was my decision to make. We looked at each other, we caught each other's eye, and we didn't want to waste part of the game with one less player.

The supporters should be proud of an excellent season, they shouldn't waste a single second being sad. Once you've given your all, you can't go around licking your wounds – you have to come back and compete next season, go around annoying other teams and being pests next year too.

Now we'll do the same thing we always do. On Monday we'll start preparing for next season, see who's coming in and who's leaving and see the options for new players. Once we've done the work with the club's sporting management, we'll have a break with our families, watch the World Cup and then excitedly begin again.
