Liverpool rue Gerrard groin strain

Liverpool FC captain Steven Gerrard will not travel to Turin for the second leg against Juventus FC.

Groin strain
Gerrard was typically inspirational as Liverpool established a 2-0 lead against the Italian side at Anfield last Tuesday, only for Fabio Cannavaro to head an away goal which leaves the tie finely poised. However, the England midfielder will be watching from home as the tie concludes, after failing to shake off a groin strain sustained during the closing stages of Saturday's 1-0 Premiership defeat at Manchester City FC.

Alonso option
Liverpool confirmed today that Gerrard will stay at Melwood for further treatment to boost his chances of playing against Tottenham Hotspur FC on Saturday. The absence of Gerrard could signal a return to the first team for Xabi Alonso following his outing for the reserves last Wednesday after three months out. Yet coach Rafael Benítez will not risk the Spain midfielder if not fully fit.
