Left-back vexes Valencia

Fábio Aurélio could miss the start of Valencia CF's UEFA Champions League campaign after knee surgery.

New problem
The 24-year-old damaged ligaments in his right knee in May 2003, an injury that sidelined him until last February. This time he has had to have small fragments of cartilage removed from his left knee, according to Valencia medical officer Jorge Candel.

Ankle worry
Fábio Aurélio has been discharged from hospital in his home country Brazil and will begin a recovery programme. However, he may need to go under the knife again to cure a problem with an ankle tendon - believed to be related to his affected knee.
