Massive vote
In a poll of coaches, club chairmen and football writers, which has been conducted every year since 1991, Shevchenko finished top for the fifth time in his career. Ukraine's all-time leading scorer earned 231 points in the poll, which represents over 60 per cent of the overall vote.
Solid season
While 2002/03 was perhaps not the best season in Shevchenko's career, he was on top form in the closing stages of the UEFA Champions League, scoring the decisive penalty to seal Milan's triumph against Juventus FC at Old Trafford. Shevchenko also became captain of the Ukraine national team this season, having already scored 21 goals in 51 appearances.

Elsewhere, 1. FC Köln striker Andriy Voronin receivied 105 points to finish second, while midfielder Anatoliy Tymoschuk from FC Shakhtar Donetsk finished third with 36 points.
