What do you need to know?

The first leg in Madrid was nothing short of a classic, with holders City taking the lead twice before being denied victory by Federico Valverde's 79th-minute finish. However, the situation is familiar for Pep Guardiola's side who, in last season's semi-finals, left Madrid with a draw (1-1 rather than 3-3) then stormed into the final with a 4-0 home success.

Highlights: Real Madrid 3-3 Man City

Carlo Ancelotti's team can never be written off, though; Real Madrid have won this competition 14 times and are eager to put things right after coming up slightly short in the first leg. "A draw feels like last year, it feels like a defeat," explained Valverde, adding: "We need to be fuelled by a sense of revenge and go to Manchester full of hunger to qualify for the semi-finals."

Expert predictions

Steve Bates, Man City reporter
Will Madrid be psychologically scarred by last season's 4-0 semi-final defeat at the City of Manchester Stadium? Such was the devastating nature of City's performance – power, ruthlessness and determination rolled into one brutal package – quite possibly. After their 3-3 first-leg draw at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, the aces seem stacked in City's favour again. With Kyle Walker returning from injury to resume his foot-race duels with Vinícius Júnior, City have all their key performers ready to create more Champions League history.

Graham Hunter, Real Madrid reporter
If recent patterns influence you, then you may view this as THE key quarter-final tie. Over the past three seasons, Madrid have faced English rivals in the semis each time, with the winner going on to lift the trophy. Two years ago, Los Blancos produced a football miracle in added time of the second leg to deny City a place in the showpiece. Otherwise, against Chelsea in 2020/21 and City last season, a first-leg home draw preceded elimination. The prospect of Éder Militão starting seems unlikely as he continues his return from eight months out, meaning Madrid will really miss the suspended Aurélien Tchouameni – and there will be huge responsibility on Vinícius Júnior to produce some magic.

What the coaches say

Pep Guardiola, Man City coach: "We need to feel that pressure. If we focus on having won it last year, we won't have that extra boost we need. We have to be hungry to compete in these games, we need to bring the right energy and we need our supporters. Sometimes we'll have to suffer because it is impossible to dominate during the 90 minutes. We are prepared to perform at the maximum level."

Carlo Ancelotti, Real Madrid coach: "Games against City have always been spectacular and this will be the same. We have to evaluate bearing in mind what happened a week ago, and believe in what we are doing today. The last game was close, now anything can happen. We have the necessary quality to create problems."
