Francisco Conceição scored an 82nd-minute winner at Leipzig on Matchday 2, giving Juventus victory after a Dušan Vlahović double. The Italian side played the final 31 minutes with ten men after goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio's red card.

Juventus have now won their last five games against German opponents; a 4-2 extra-time loss at Bayern München in the 2015/16 Champions League round of 16 second leg is Juve's only defeat in their last 11 games against Bundesliga clubs, home and away (W7 D3).

Juve are unbeaten in five matches at home to German visitors (W3 D2), since a 0-2 loss to Bayern in the 2012/13 quarter-final second leg (0-4 aggregate).

Juventus are making their 24th appearance in the Champions League proper – an Italian record, three more than AC Milan.

The Bianconeri have returned to the competition after missing out in 2023/24. The previous season was their 11th consecutive Champions League campaign, and the first time they missed out on the round of 16 since 2013/14 as Juve finished behind Benfica and Paris Saint-Germain in their section.

Juve have lost three of their last five home Champions League matches having won ten of the previous 11, losing once.

The Turin team went on to win three UEFA Europa League ties in 2022/23 before losing 3-2 on aggregate to eventual champions Sevilla in the semi-finals.

Juventus did not feature in UEFA competition in 2023/24 for the first time since 2011/12.

Champions of Europe in 1985 and 1996, Juve have also lost seven European Cup finals including five in the Champions League era – more than any other club.

Having won a record nine successive Serie A titles between 2012 and 2020, Juve finished third in 2023/24 – their highest final placing since being crowned champions in 2019/20.

Massimiliano Allegri left Juventus in May after three years in charge – he had also coached the club between 2014 and 2019, leading them to the Champions League finals in 2015 and 2017 – to be replaced by Thiago Motta.

Stuttgart

Record vs Italian clubs: W2 D3 L6 F12 A18
Away record vs Italian clubs: W0 D2 L4

Stuttgart were knocked out by Lazio in the 2012/13 Europa League round of 16, losing 0-2 in the home first leg.

The subsequent 3-1 loss in Rome made it four defeats in six games in Italy, where Stuttgart have never won; they have never scored more than once in an away match against Serie A sides.

A 3-1 win at home to Perugia in the 2002 UEFA Intertoto Cup third round first leg – a tie they won 4-3 on aggregate – is Stuttgart's only success in their last ten games against Italian teams (D3 L6).

This is Stuttgart's fourth appearance in the Champions League proper and a first since 2009/10.

In that most recent appearance 15 seasons ago, Stuttgart were second in their section behind Sevilla to reach the round of 16, where they were eliminated by holders Barcelona (1-1 h, 0-4 a).

Stuttgart have won two of their 12 away games in the Champions League proper, losing seven.

The German club are taking part in European competition for the first time since 2013/14, when their Europa League campaign lasted two ties. They beat Botev Plovdiv on away goals in the third qualifying round (1-1 a, 0-0 h) but then lost out to Rijeka in the qualifying play-offs (1-2 a, 2-2 h).

Sebastian Hoeneß guided Stuttgart to second place in the 2023/24 Bundesliga – his first full season in charge having taken over in April 2023. It was the Swabians' highest finish since winning the last of their five league titles in 2006/07.
