Chelsea and Barcelona renew one of the UEFA Champions League's most enduring rivalries as they meet at Stamford Bridge for the first time in more than seven years on Matchday 5.

Last match

Both teams have won four of their previous 14 fixtures, with six draws.

This is the clubs' first meeting since the 2017/18 round of 16, when Barcelona advanced 4-1 on aggregate following a 1-1 draw in London and a 3-0 home victory.

Their only group stage/league phase meetings came in 2006/07, Chelsea winning 1-0 at home before a 2-2 draw in Spain.

Chelsea have lost only one of their seven matches at home against Barcelona (W4 D2).

The Blues have suffered only three defeats in their last 13 games against Spanish teams (W6 D4), beating Real Betis 4-1 in last season's UEFA Conference League final in Wroclaw.

Chelsea have lost only two of their 16 Champions League group stage/league phase matches against Spanish teams (W7 D7).

Barcelona have lost only three of their last 20 matches against English teams (W13 D4), although a 2-1 victory at Newcastle on Matchday 1 was their first in four games (D1 L2).

Chelsea

This is Chelsea's 20th Champions League campaign, and a first since 2022/23, when they progressed to the quarter-finals – they have reached the knockout rounds in their last eight campaigns.

Barcelona

This is Barcelona's 30th campaign in the Champions League proper, a competition record they share with Real Madrid. They have featured every season since 2003/04.

Second in last season's league phase (W6 D1 L1), Hansi Flick's side went on to beat Benfica (4-1 aggregate) and Borussia Dortmund (5-3) before losing to Inter in the semi-finals (6-7).

Key stats

Having drawn 2-2 at Qarabağ on Matchday 4, Chelsea have won 14 of their last 17 European matches (D1 L2) and 12 of the last 14 in the group stage/league phase – the other exception a 3-1 Matchday 1 loss at Bayern München.

Chelsea have lost only two of their last 61 European group stage/league phase matches at Stamford Bridge and are unbeaten in 16 (W12 D4), since a 0-1 Champions League defeat against Valencia in September 2019.

Chelsea have scored in their last 19 European games.
