UEFA Champions League hopefuls Olympique de Marseille have won the race to sign France Under-19 captain Benjamin Mendy from Le Havre AC.

The left-back, who turns 19 on 17 July, three days before leading France in their first game at the UEFA European Under-19 Championship finals in Lithuania, has 57 Ligue 2 appearances to his name since making his senior debut in 2011.

Details of the contract length and fee have not been revealed, but the player went straight into Élie Baup's squad for Tuesday evening's 1-1 friendly draw with FC Sion, playing the second half. "I hope I getas much time as possible on the pitch," he said after signing. "Arriving at this club is a bonus for me. I know I will have to prove my worth."

Mendy is OM's second capture of the summer, following France forward Dimitri Payet to the Stade Vélodrome. The 2012/13 Ligue 1 runners-up return to the UEFA Champions League group stage this season.
