Sporting Clube de Portugal have cast their net wide to strengthen their defence for their UEFA Champions League return.
Joining last season's Liga runners-up are Egypt central defender Ramy Rabia from al-Ahly SC and Argentina youth left-back Jonathan Silva, previously with Club Estudiantes de La Plata. Rabia has signed a six-year deal, Jonathan's contract runs until 2019.
Already with eight games and two goals to his name for Egypt, the 21-year-old Rabia can also play in midfield. He helped al-Ahly to victory in the last two CAF Champions League finals.
Rabia's arrival and that of the 20-year-old Jonathan at Sporting adds to a squad already bolstered this summer by defenders Paulo Oliveira, André Geraldes and Naby Sarr, midfielders Oriol Rosell, Ryan Gauld and Simeon Slavchev, and forward Junya Tanaka. They begin the UEFA Champions League in the group stage.
