Guerreiro reflects on 'special night' with Dortmund

UEFA EURO 2016 winner Raphaël Guerreiro got a goal and an assist on his first Borussia Dortmund start – and believes all six that they scored at Legia Warszawa will be vital in the group.

Raphaël Guerreiro came to many people's attention with his role in Portugal's UEFA EURO 2016 win – but Borussia Dortmund were ahead of the game.

Dortmund signed the Lorient left-back on 16 June, three weeks before Guerreiro played the full 120 minutes of Portugal's final triumph against France. Last week the versatile 22-year-old made his first competitive start for BVB, scoring one and making another in their opening 6-0 UEFA Champions League Group F victory at Legia Warszawa.

"I am really happy, about both the team display and my own personal performance," Guerreiro told UEFA.com. "We did a great job in Warsaw.

"I am very satisfied. Of course, we came to take three points but before the game you can't be sure how it is going to turn out. Scoring six goals and not conceding is fantastic news.

"I must admit before the first whistle I thought there would  be more resistance from Legia, but we soon realised which team was better and took full advantage.

"We wanted to start this Champions League campaign in the best possible way and we did. It was something special for me: my first start for BVB – what's more, my first in the Champions League – and it resulted in a goal and an assist. I couldn't have asked for more. It was a really special night for me."

Making a strong start was important for the 1997 champions, particularly considering title-holding Real Madrid visit Germany on 27 September. "We were hungry for more and more goals, right until the end," Guerreiro said.

"And it could be really important. Why? We have Real Madrid in our group so maybe it will go to goal difference in the end. This is another reason I am extremely happy we were so clinical.

"There are difficult games ahead, like the next one against Real Madrid, but also Sporting are a great team. But we took a big step today and we can build on this."
