Sevilla bank on home record as Bayern visit

There is a large gulf in the quarter-final experience separating Sevilla and Bayern, but the German side will be wary in Spain.

There is a vast gulf in the quarter-final experience of Sevilla FC and FC Bayern München, although the German side will know to take nothing for granted when they travel to Andalusia for the first leg of their UEFA Champions League tie.

• While Sevilla are in the last eight of the European Cup for the first time since their only previous appearance at this stage 60 years ago, this is Bayern's seventh consecutive quarter-final and 29th overall – only Real Madrid CF, in this round for the 35th time, have featured more often.

• Bayern have never before played Sevilla but have been eliminated by Spanish opponents in the last four seasons. Furthermore, while the Munich club have lost their last five away games to Liga sides, Sevilla are unbeaten in their 11 home games against German clubs (W7 D4).

Match background

Sevilla
• Sevilla's only previous European Cup quarter-final came in their debut European season, 1957/58, when they lost 10-2 on aggregate to Real Madrid CF (0-8 away, 2-2 home).

• That 8-0 first-leg defeat by Madrid is Sevilla's heaviest European loss, and the biggest margin in any European Cup quarter-final match.

Highlights: Manchester United 1-2 Sevilla (1-2 agg)

• Sevilla have won their last three home games against German sides, all without conceding, most recently beating VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-0 in the 2015/16 group stage. That was their fifth successive win against a Bundesliga club, home and away, although that run was ended by a 4-2 reverse in Germany in the return.

• The Spanish side's record in two-legged knockout ties against German opposition is W3 L2. Their most recent encounter was a 4-2 aggregate win against Mönchengladbach in the round of 32 in Sevilla's victorious 2014/15 UEFA Europa League campaign (1-0 home, 3-2 away).

• Vincenzo Montella's side reached this stage with a 2-1 aggregate win against Manchester United FC, Wissam Ben Yedder coming off the bench to score twice in the second leg at Old Trafford.

• Sevilla are unbeaten at home in this season's competition, drawing 0-0 against United in the round of 16 first leg. They picked up seven points at home in Group E; a Ben Yedder hat-trick secured a 3-0 victory over NK Maribor on matchday two before FC Spartak Moskva were beaten 2-1. That record looked under threat when Liverpool FC raced into a three-goal half-time lead on matchday five, but Sevilla staged a remarkable fightback to snatch a 3-3 draw.

• The Spanish club have won six of their last ten European home matches, losing one and drawing the other three, against United, Liverpool and İstanbul Başakşehir in this season's play-offs (2-2).

Bayern
• Bayern are in the quarter-finals for a club-record seventh successive season. Before losing to Real Madrid 12 months ago, they had won six last-eight ties in a row.

• Bayern are appearing in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals for the 17th time, more than any other club. FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are next in line on 16 apiece.

• Bayern's record in two-legged ties against Spanish sides is W9 L10. Their interest in last season's competition was ended at this stage by Real Madrid, who won 2-1 in Munich and 4-2 after extra time in Spain – Bayern's fourth successive knockout loss in ties against Liga teams. They were beaten by Club Atlético de Madrid in 2015/16, FC Barcelona in 2014/15 and Real Madrid again in 2013/14 – all in the semi-finals.

• Overall Bayern's away record against Spanish clubs is W6 D5 L15.

• Jupp Heynckes' side reached this stage with an 8-1 aggregate win against Beşiktaş JK in the round of 16, including a 5-0 win in Munich that was the biggest home first-leg victory in the UEFA Champions League knockout phase.

• Beaten 3-0 at eventual Group B winners Paris Saint-Germain on matchday two, prompting the departure of coach Carlo Ancelotti, Bayern's subsequent 2-1 wins at both Celtic FC and RSC Anderlecht, and the 3-1 win at Beşiktaş in the last-16 second leg, mean they have recorded five victories in their last 12 European away games – with five losses.

• Under Ancelotti, Bayern came second in their group behind Atlético Madrid in 2016/17 – the first time they had failed to win their section since 2009/10, and repeated this season.
