Benítez boys backed by belief

Liverpool FC manager Rafael Benítez insisted hard work, great support and belief were behind his side's victory.

Rafael Benítez, Liverpool manager
The secret is to work hard, to have our supporters behind us and to believe until the end. When you have your supporters behind you, you run a little bit more and we've done a good game - the same in the first leg - we have qualified and that's a good job. Chelsea are a fantastic team but we worked hard until the end and played with a strong mentality. It is difficult to play at a high tempo for 96 minutes but maybe the crowd here are the best supporters in Europe. It's good for English football to have a team in the final. People talk about favourites and they lose. If we beat Juventus [FC], Bayer [04] Leverkusen and Chelsea, why not AC Milan or PSV Eindhoven?

José Mourinho, Chelsea manager
The best team lost. Liverpool scored an early goal and after that only one team played, the other just defended. No complaints about the tactics - that's for Rafa [Benítez]. They play the way they want, they fought a lot - I have to give them credit for that. They fought, fought, fought, fought. They are in the final and from my heart I hope they win. The crowd was magnificent and maybe that interfered with the result. It is a pity we won't be playing in the final but my players are heroes. Out of four competitions this season, we've won two, so it was a good season. But tomorrow is another day - tomorrow we start preparing for next season.

Jamie Carragher, Liverpool defender
The club's been built on these type of nights. It's been taken away from us these last few years but we want to get back to those heights. We've had a taste of that tonight and we've got the chance to make a piece of history. It's great, but it's only the semi-final. There's still a cup to be won.

Steven Gerrard, Liverpool midfield player
Jamie Carragher was immense, unbelievable - what a performance he put in. Chelsea played well but we defended well and we were due a bit of luck. And we're going to the final, that's the most important thing.
