McLeish relief at battling Rangers

Alex McLeish believes Rangers FC's draw with FC Porto could prove to be the turning point in the Scottish champions' season.

Co Adriaanse, Porto coach
In the first half we played well. We had a lot of possession but Rangers just defended and they did it with a lot of players. That gave us problems but still we had two good chances. That's why we decided to change Pedro Emanuel for Hugo Almeida at half-time. They scored with their only chance and even after that we had a great chance through Lisandro and Paulo Assunção. We are bottom of group because although we dominated Rangers, we failed to score again - but we can still qualify. Naturally it's better to play in the Champions League than in the UEFA Cup. We have to win at Artmedia and wait for Inter to do their job in Glasgow. I hope that Inter play with their best team there; if I were in Roberto Mancini's shoes I would play with my best team.

Alex McLeish, Rangers manager
I'm satisfied with this result, for the players, for the fans, especially after the complicated few weeks that we have had. The draw gives us belief that we can start a new phase. My gamble to bring on McCormack was natural because he has been working well tactically, had his chance and did very well to finish it. I was very happy with this result because we have not been doing that well domestically. We had to secure the result and we came here to fight Porto and play defensively with five men in midfield. After Co Adriaanse's tactical change at the interval and then the Porto goal we quickly changed to 4-4-2. After one or two good attacks we scored. We have secured a UEFA Cup place, so now we'll try for more.
