R. Standard de Liège have signed Steven Defour as they plot a path towards the UEFA Champions League group stage.

'Step forward'
The 18-year-old playmaker has left KRC Genk for an undisclosed fee and will have a five-year contract at the team who finished runners-up in Belgium last season. As a result, Standard will enter Europe's premier club competition in the third qualifying round, one tie from the group stage. Defour, who made 26 appearances last term, has already been capped twice by his country. "Standard are a step forward, they are a club with passion," Defour said. He had been linked with a move to AFC Ajax.
