Manchester United FC and BV Borussia Dortmund both came from behind to secure victories in their respective opening fixtures in the UEFA Champions League second group stage.
Van Nistelrooij double
In Group D, FC Basel caught United cold with a goal on 31 seconds - the sixth fastest in Champions League history - from Argentinian striker Christian Giménez at Saint Jakob Park. However, the visitors found their form in the second half and two goals from Ruud van Nistelrooij - the second a superb solo effort - put Sir Alex Ferguson's men in the driving seat before Ole Gunnar Solskjær struck to seal a 3-1 win.
In the night's other Group D encounter, goals from Diego Tristán and Roy Makaay gave RC Deportivo La Coruña a two-goal lead inside eleven minutes against Juventus FC, only for the Serie A side to battle back at the Riazor. The Italian side earned a share of the spoils as Alessandro Birindelli and Pavel Nedved struck to make the final score 2-2.
AC Milan made a bright start to their Group C match against holders Real Madrid CF at the San Siro, but had to wait until the 40th minute to make the breakthrough. Andriy Shevchenko fired in from the edge of the box after being sent clear by Rui Costa's clever pass to seal a valuable 1-0 victory for the hosts.
In the day's early kick-off, Dortmund recovered from a goal behind to start their Group C campaign with a 2-1 victory against FC Lokomotiv Moskva on a muddy pitch in Moscow. Sergey Ignashevich gave Lokomotiv a deserved lead just past the half-hour but goals from Torsten Frings and Jan Koller before half-time secured the away victory for the German side.
