Michael Carrick has become Manchester United FC's first summer signing after they agreed a deal worth up to €27m with Tottenham Hotspur FC.

Talented performer
The 25-year-old was part of the England squad at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and impressed in the 1-0 second-round defeat of Ecuador, his only finals appearance. Carrick played 63 league games in two seasons with Tottenham, his 35 starts and two goals in the 2005/06 campaign representing his best return in the Premiership. He will wear the No16 shirt at Old Trafford, formerly property of Roy Keane.

'Agreed terms'
A United statement said: "Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur can confirm they have agreed terms for the transfer of Michael Carrick." The move, which was sealed when Carrick passed a medical, follows the departure of striker Ruud van Nistelrooij to Real Madrid CF last week. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted that "one or two" other signings could be made before their season starts on 20 August.

Desire
Carrick, capped seven times, came to prominence at West Ham United FC, spending five terms with the London club. He switched to Tottenham for €4m and became a fans' favourite at White Hart Lane, but could not be swayed from a transfer to Old Trafford. "This is a move Michael wants to make," Tottenham manager Martin Jol said. "We have given him every reason to stay but he has asked to be allowed to leave."
