Quartet gunning for next stage

The qualification issues in UEFA Champions Groups A and B could be settled tonight.

Unbeaten in Europe
Semi-finalists last season, FC Barcelona will qualify for the last eight should they secure a home point against struggling Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Barça's task looks a straightforward one; they are unbeaten in the competition this year, while Leverkusen have lost all their matches in the pool.

Possible elimination
The arrival of Radomir Antic has stabilised a previously rocky Barcelona boat, although the Spanish side are without a number of influential figures including Luis Enrique, Phillip Cocu and Carlos Puyol for the Camp Nou fixture. Should the Catalans lose and Internazionale FC and Newcastle United FC draw, then Barça could still be eliminated if they lost by more than three goals in England and Inter beat Leverkusen next week.

Bellamy returns
However, that would all become academic if Inter see off Newcastle at the San Siro tonight. The Milanese side are on seven points, three behind Barcelona and one clear of tonight's visitors. Yet Newcastle are in form - Alan Shearer scored a hat-trick as Sir Bobby Robson's side completed a double over Leverkusen last time out - and are further strengthened by the return of Craig Bellamy, Shearer's regular strike partner who was dismissed against Inter at Saint James' Park.

Latest casualties
Injuries have left Inter in disarray. Marco Materazzi and Cristiano Zanetti have joined a casualty list in the last 48 hours that already features Daniele Adani, Matías Almeyda, Domenico Morfeo, Stéphane Dalmat, Mohamed Kallon, Hernán Crespo and Nicola Beati. Alvaro Recoba is suspended for the Nerazzurri and Gabriel Batistuta is ineligible.

Defensive problems
Arsenal FC are also contemplating tackling AS Roma at Highbury without some key personnel. Central defenders Sol Campbell (achilles) and Martin Keown (calf) are both struggling to be fit along with Thierry Henry, who also has a knock to his calf. The Gunners will qualify if they claim three points and AFC Ajax do likewise in Amsterdam against Valencia CF.

Brilliant win
If Ajax win they are definitely through unless Roma win in London, in which case they may require a point in their final game in Rome. Ronald Koeman's side are currently level on six points with Arsenal, while Valencia have five points and Roma three following a brilliant 3-0 win in Spain on Matchday 10.

Gunning for victory
Fabio Capello, the Roma coach, has promised to go all out for a win - something his side have done only three times in their last 12 Champions League matches, though each has come away. "A draw might leave us with some chance of qualifying but I'm only thinking about one thing: victory," he said. For their fixture, Valencia are without the suspended Miguel Angulo. Matchday 11 concludes tomorrow night.
