Olympique Lyonnais defender Anderson is to undergo surgery on his right knee, ruling the Brazilian out of the remainder of the campaign.
Cup woe
The 27-year-old had a scan on Friday which revealed damage to cruciate knee ligaments. Anderson sustained the injury against Le Mans UC 72 in the French League Cup two days before, but went on to complete the match which Lyon lost 1-0.
Surgery required
Anderson was signed last summer from SL Benfica to cover for compatriot Cris, who suffered a similar injury in August. Cris only resumed training this week and is expected to return to action next month, possibly in time for the UEFA Champions League first knockout round first leg against Manchester United FC at the Stade de Gerland on 20 February. Anderson, capped once by Brazil, is the fourth player from the French champions to require a knee operation this term after Grégory Coupet, Cris and Patrick Müller.
