Sporting Clube de Portugal have signed 23-year-old Chilean international Matías Fernández in a €3.6m deal from Villarreal CF.
The attacking midfielder has agreed a four-year-old deal with the Portuguese outfit after passing a medical on Tuesday, departing Spain less than three years after arriving from CD Colo-Colo for €8.7m. He managed just 30 Liga starts in three seasons with the Yellow Submarine and has switched to UEFA Champions League contenders in search of the form that saw him named South American Player of the Year in 2006. The €3.6m fee could rise a further €500,000 based on appearances over the next two years and Villarreal will retain 20 per cent of any sell-on fee.
