Ricken commits to Dortmund

BV Borussia Dortmund's Lars Ricken has signed a new deal with the German 1. Bundesliga club.

BV Borussia Dortmund forward Lars Ricken has signed a three-year extension to his contract, which ties him to the UEFA Cup hopefuls until July 2006.

'Plenty of potential'
Ricken, whose fine club form in 2001 earned him a recall to the Germany squad, said: "I am devoted to Borussia with all my heart. We have a young side with plenty of potential to do great things in the future." Dortmund president Gerd Niebaum said of the 25-year-old's decision: "We have once more managed to keep one of our key performers at the club and Ricken will no doubt play a big part in our future plans."

Champions League final goal
Ricken broke into the Dortmund first team in 1994 at just 17 and, after playing his part in the club's 1. Bundesliga successes of 1995 and 1996, he scored the third goal in their 3-1 UEFA Champions League final victory over Juventus FC in 1997.

Nowotnty commits
Ricken is not the only German international to decide his future this week as Jens Nowotny is expected to sign shortly a two-year extension that will keep him at 1. Bundesliga leaders Bayer 04 Leverkusen until 2007.
