Happy to stay
The 27-year-old had fallen out of favour with coach Fatih Terim after a dispute over his off-the-field behaviour and his apparent refusal to sign a new deal. However, he has now pledged his future to the Istanbul club.
Major factor
"I have made some mistakes in the past two months but I never thought of leaving Galatasaray," he said. He also revealed that Terim was a major factor in his decision to stay despite receiving offers to move abroad. Galatasaray spokesman Ali Dürüst added that the club had given the player time to think about his future and that all sides were happy with the agreement.
Injury troubles
Ümit joined Galatasaray in summer 2001 from Gençlerbirligi SK and instantly settled at the club. However, his opportunities have been limited by injury and loss of form this season. The announcement came on the eve of Galatasaray's UEFA Cup third round first-leg tie against Villarreal CF on Thursday night.
