Old heads set for UEFA Cup

Fabien Barthez, Fabrizio Ravanelli and Finidi George are among the players newly registered for the UEFA Cup.

Deadline passed
Since the conclusion of the second round last November, clubs were allowed to add new players to their squads provided they had been registered by last Monday. With the passing of that deadline, no players other than those now registered will be able to play in this season's competition.

Famous faces
Barthez has been brought in to bolster Olympique de Marseille's challenge, marking a return to the club where he lifted the European Cup in 1993. Finidi, a winner of the blue-riband event with AFC Ajax in 1995, has joined RCD Mallorca while Ravanelli, a European champion with Juventus FC in 1996, has left British football to aid AC Perugia's challenge.

Trio stay silent
All but three of the 32 teams involved in the third round, which will be played over two legs on 26 February and 3 March, have taken advantage of the transfer window to add new names to their squad list. Interestingly, the trio who made no changes, Liverpool FC, Valencia CF and SL Benfica, are among the favourites to go all the way to the final in Gothenburg on 19 May.
