Hofs on his way as Ono is sidelined

Feyenoord have signed SBV Vitesse's Nicky Hofs for next season but have lost Shinji Ono to injury.

Summer switch
The 21-year-old Hofs will arrive at De Kuip on a free transfer in the summer, after seeing out the remaining six months of his contract at Vitesse. He has signed a three-year deal starting from 1 July 2005, with an option for two more years. Hofs, who has scored 15 goals in 69 Eredivisie matches, said: "Feyenoord is a real club of the people, and I am a boy of the people. So that seems to be a good combination to me."

Surgery likely
Ono, meanwhile, will spend the winter break recovering from the ankle injury he suffered in the 2-0 defeat against ADO Den Haag on Sunday. The 25-year-old has suffered trouble with the same ankle since September and will travel to Japan for a specialist's assessment of the damage. Club doctor Robbart van Linschoten said: "It is expected that he will have to undergo surgery, and in that case he will be out for about six weeks."

Doubtful for restart
Ono will miss Feyenoord's winter training camp in Gran Canaria that starts on 5 January and could still be missing when the season restarts on 23 January against Vitesse. However, it is expected that he will be fit for the UEFA Cup tie against Sporting Clube de Portugal on 16 February.
