Sand to help children's cause

FC Schalke 04 forward Ebbe Sand will sign off on a distinguished playing career on 22 May with a benefit match between Denmark and former club Brøndby IF.

FC Schalke 04 forward Ebbe Sand will end a distinguished playing career in fitting fashion on 22 May with a benefit match in Copenhagen between Denmark and Brøndby IF.

European hope
The 33-year-old, who made 66 appearances for his country, is to hang up his boots at the end of the 2005/06 campaign and move into club management with Superliga side Silkeborg IF. Sand will hope to go into the game with a UEFA Cup winner's medal, with Schalke one of four teams vying to get to the final on 10 May.

Children to benefit
Sand has been with Schalke since summer 1999, when he left Brøndby for the Bundesliga. During his time in Germany, he has successfully battled testicular cancer and overcome viral meningitis. It is no surprise then that proceeds from the friendly will go to the Children's Project Denmark, an organisation that helps youngsters in hospital.

'Special feeling'
Danish internationals Martin Jørgensen and Thomas Helveg are among those who have played a part setting up the match. "Helping Children's Project Denmark gives me a very special feeling," ACF Fiorentina winger Jørgensen said. "You know you are part of something big, something good - you are making a difference for the children."
