Ehiogu adds steel to Rangers

Rangers FC have signed the former England defender Ugo Ehiogu - a player with "steel and experience" - from Middlesbrough FC on an 18-month contract.

Record fee
The 34-year-old centre-back has signed for the Glasgow club on a free transfer following a medical. Ehiogu, who won four England caps, joined Middlesbrough from Aston Villa FC for €11.5m in 2000 and went on to make 126 Premiership appearances for the north-east team. He was loaned to Leeds United AFC in November and played six times for the first division side, scoring once.

Knockout tie
"He will give us a bit of steel and experience," said Rangers manager Walter Smith. "We need a number of players between now and the end of the season, especially as we have European matches coming up." The Scottish Premier League outfit play Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC in the last 32 of the UEFA Cup with the first leg in Israel on 14 February.
