Both sides are through to the Round of 32, but concerns over their final rankings should keep FC Zürich and Bayer 04 Leverkusen sharp as they end their Group E commitments.

• Teams that end top of their sections are guaranteed a tie against third-placed finishers in the Round of 32. Second-placed sides will earn a game against one of the eight clubs who switch from the UEFA Champions League. The teams that finish first and second in the sections will also be sure of a home fixture in the second leg of their Round of 32 ties.

• Zürich won their opening games against eliminated AC Sparta Praha and Toulouse FC, but lost 1-0 at FC Spartak Moskva to drop into second in the section.

• Leverkusen claimed 1-0 home wins against Toulouse and Sparta either side of a 2-1 defeat in Moscow, and are third in the section – level on points with Zürich but with an inferior goal difference.

• The form book would not seem to favour Michael Skibbe's side, despite good results in the Bundesliga. Leverkusen have not won an away game in UEFA club competition since winning 2-0 at Maccabi Haifa FC in the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League group stage. Their last 18 UEFA competition away games have produced five draws and 13 defeats.

• Zürich, by contrast, are unbeaten in their last nine home games since losing 2-1 at home against KRC Genk in the first round of the 2000/01 UEFA Cup.

• The two teams have never met in UEFA club competition.

• Zürich have played eight games against sides from over the border in Germany since meeting 1. FC Dynamo Dresden – then in the former East Germany – in the quarter-finals of the 1976/77 European Champion Clubs' Cup, winning on away goals before losing to Liverpool FC in the semi-finals

• In total, they have won twice and lost six times against German clubs, with both of those victories coming at home. However, they have not played against a German side since reunification.

• Leverkusen’s only previous game against a Swiss side came in last season’s UEFA Cup first round, as they drew 0-0 at FC Sion before winning 3-1 at home in the second leg to qualify for the group stage.

• Leverkusen boast two Swiss stars in their squad in the form of midfielders Tranquillo Barnetta and Pirmin Schwegler.

• Swiss international Barnetta, 22, started his career with Zürich's Super League rivals FC St. Gallen before moving to Hannover 96 in 2004 and on to Leverkusen the following year.

• The 20-year-old Schwegler played for FC Lucerne and BSC Young Boys before joining Leverkusen in 2006. His brother Christian still plays in Switzerland with Young Boys.

• Zürich's Rafael Araujo and Florian Stahel are within a booking of a one-match ban, as is Leverkusen's Gonzalo Castro.

• The draw for the Round of 32 and Round of 16 will be held in Nyon on 21 December from 13.00CET.
