UEFA Cup hopefuls Motherwell FC have made a double signing on the eve of the new Scottish Premier League season by bringing in midfielder Jim O'Brien and goalkeeper Gunnar Nielsen.

Under-21 internationals
The Fir Park club secured 20-year-old Republic of Ireland U21 winger O'Brien from Celtic FC, where he made just one substitute appearance in the league, on a two-year deal along with Faroe Islands U21 custodian Nielsen, 21, on a six-month loan from Blackburn Rovers FC where he has yet to feature in the top flight. Meanwhile, manager Mark McGhee has confirmed that Northern Ireland international Stephen Craigan will be the club captain this season. Motherwell enter the UEFA Cup in the first round during September.
