'Fantastic atmosphere'
The French international broke the deadlock with a sumptuous effort six minutes before half-time following a rapid exchange with Jermain Defoe, and his team-mate ensured the sell-out Fratton Park crowd went home in high spirits when he turned in a Glen Johnson cross on the hour. "It was something special for the club to be playing in Europe for the first time, so I wanted to help make it a night the supporters wouldn't forget," said Diarra. "So I was happy that we won and that I scored on such an important night. The atmosphere was fantastic for 90 minutes. It was special."
Ball retention
Guimarães had their chances early on and even won a penalty in the first half, only for João Paulo Fajardo to fire over, but they were unable to register on the night and will need to put in an excellent performance in Portugal on 2 October. "I thought we played very well for the first hour," added Diarra. "Then, when we got the second, we just tried to keep the ball. It was very important that we didn't concede a goal."
'I'm greedy'
Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp was quick to warn that the tie is far from over, however. "I'm greedy and would have liked three goals but would have settled for two before the game," he said. "It's nowhere near over. There's still a lot to play for and it's game on. We saw enough of them to know they're dangerous opposition. Vitória will have to come at us and we're a team that can always score goals – we went to Everton [FC] and got three. Hopefully we can go there and get through to get into the group stage."
