The Romanian international, who turned 30 last week, was injured early in Sunday's 2-1 loss at home to US Lecce after an accidental collision with opposition goalkeeper Francesco Benussi. A scan earlier today allayed fears of a fracture, meaning Mutu will not have to undergo surgery, and though Fiorentina have not set a date for his return, they added: "It will take less time than his previous injury [in August] when he was forced out for four weeks." That should mean that Mutu will be fit to face AFC Ajax in the UEFA Cup Round of 32 next month, with the first leg to take place on 18/19 February. Meanwhile Viola goalkeeper Sébastien Frey should be available to take on AC Milan on Saturday after a scan on his right knee, which he hurt against Lecce, ruled out ligament damage.
