ACF Fiorentina winger Mario Alberto Santana will miss the rest of the season after it was confirmed on Tuesday that he will require surgery on the ligament damage he sustained in his left knee in his side's 3-1 win against Bologna FC earlier this month.

The 27-year-old will be operated on in Rome on Wednesday and is not expected to play again for five months. Santana played in all six of Fiorentina's UEFA Champions League group stage matches, but will now miss the Viola's UEFA Cup Round of 32 tie against AFC Ajax on 19 and 26 February.
