Goalkeeper Stanislav Bogush wants FC Shakhtar Donetsk to win the UEFA Cup after they knocked his FC Dynamo Kyiv side out in the semi-finals, but admitted that the loss was "the biggest disappointment" of his and his team-mates' careers.
Ukrainian pride
A 2-1 reverse in Donetsk ended Dynamo's hopes of reaching the final on 20 May, though Bogush was magnanimous in defeat and said he would be willing Shakhtar on when they come up against Werder Bremen in Istanbul. "I wish them good luck," he said. "They deserve to win the UEFA Cup. I will definitely be hoping for a Donetsk victory since I really want a Ukrainian side to win the UEFA Cup."
'Awful mistakes'
The brave words, however, could not mask the raw emotion of the night, and Bogush said: "This is the biggest disappointment of my career, and most of the Dynamo players feel the same. We played much better than the first match, but we made two awful mistakes − just one more than Shakhtar did. The game was very nervy and some players couldn't stand that pressure.
Self-inflicted wounds
"Shakhtar are a big club, and perhaps this time they were a bit better, but in general our strengths are even so we really could have got the result we needed," concluded the 25-year-old. Croatian defender Goran Sabljić added bitterly: "Shakhtar are not a better side than us but today they were a little luckier but, of course, we have no one to blame but ourselves for this loss."
