AS Roma striker and former Italian international Vincenzo Montella has announced his retirement after terminating his contract with the Giallorossi which still had a year left to run.

Goalscoring record
"It will take some time to get used to my new life," the 35-year-old said. "Sometimes you have to find the strength to stop." Montella, who scored three goals in 20 games for Italy, joined Roma from UC Sampdoria in 1999. He struck 84 goals in 192 Serie A appearances for the capital club and also played for Empoli FC, Genoa CFC and Fulham FC during his career.

'Special relationship'
Montella, whose goals were instrumental in Roma's Scudetto triumph in 2001, was a fans' favourite at the Stadio Olimpico especially after scoring four goals in the 5-1 derby win against S.S. Lazio in 2002. He will now take on a technical role in Roma's youth system. "I have a special relationship with this club and I thank them for this opportunity to work with young players," he added. "I will start with great enthusiasm." Roma will play in the UEFA Europa League after finishing sixth in Serie A last season.
