The top scorer prize for the inaugural UEFA Europa League campaign looks set to be shared between Claudio Pizarro and Óscar Cardozo, saving any final heroics by Fulham FC's strikers on 12 May.
With just the Hamburg showpiece to come, Werder Bremen's Pizarro and Cardozo of SL Benfica sit top of the pile on nine goals, three clear of the chasing pack. Bobby Zamora and Zoltán Gera, following his winning goal against Hamburger SV on Thursday, are among the that sextet but would need to score three to draw level at the summit when they face Club Atlético de Madrid. Since neither have scored a hat-trick in six years, that seems unlikely.
Diego Forlán is Atlético's top scorer, his match-winner against Liverpool FC last night taking him to four goals since the Spanish side switched from the UEFA Champions League in the winter. Only strikes from the first round onwards count towards the totals.
