VfB Stuttgart attacking midfielder Johan Audel will miss the start of the German club's UEFA Europa League knockout campaign after tearing knee ligaments.
Audel suffered the injury in training on Sunday, his 27th birthday, in a collision with goalkeeper Sven Ulreich and is out for several months. The winger will still be sidelined when the UEFA Europa League Group H winners play in the round of 32 on 17 and 24 February against opponents they will discover on Friday. He will undergo an operation later this week.
Team-mate Ulreich said: "I am very sorry for Johan. This is really bad news. We all hope the surgery goes well and Johan will be able to start rehab soon. The most important thing is for him to get fit as soon as possible."
Frenchman Audel, signed last summer from Valenciennes FC, had only just returned to fitness after persistent ankle problems which had restricted him to six competitive appearances this season. Stuttgart, under new coach Bruno Labbadia, complete their group campaign at home to Odense BK on Thursday.
