2011/12 in Europe: Out of Europe since the 2006/07 UEFA Cup, Newcastle last got this far eight years ago.

The season so far: Just one defeat in 12 UEFA Europa League games is testament to a level of European consistency Newcastle have not matched domestically. Second behind FC Girondins de Bordeaux in Group D, Alan Pardew's side have since overcome FC Metalist Kharkiv and FC Anji Makhachkala thanks to solitary goals from Shola Ameobi and Papiss Cissé.

One to watch: A one-club man, Steven Taylor made his Newcastle debut in early 2004 and has been a defensive stalwart ever since. Still only 27, he received his first England call-up for competitive senior duty ahead of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro. "This is fully deserved for Steven," said Pardew. "He missed part of the season but since his return he has been outstanding."
