Borussia Dortmund have given Moritz Leitner a contract extension until 2017 with the first two years of that period to be spent on loan at VfB Stuttgart.

The 20-year-old midfielder went to Dortmund in 2011 from TSV 1860 München and has already been farmed out once to FC Augsburg. He played 17 times in Dortmund's 2011/12 Bundesliga title win and made 30 competitive appearances last season, including four on the way to the UEFA Champions League final.

After confirming the German Under-21 international's loan to Stuttgart, Dortmund's sporting director Michael Zorc said: "He should get plenty of match practice over the two years."

Zorc's Stuttgart counterpart Fredi Bobic added: "He fits in perfectly with our requirements: he is young, technically gifted and has a very good footballing brain."

Leitner himself said: "I think we can achieve a lot here. I really want to see Stuttgart back where they belong and I want to play my part in that."

While Dortmund start the UEFA Champions League in the group stage, German Cup finalists Stuttgart will enter the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round on 1 and 8 August.
