There were 18 UEFA Europa League teams in action on Monday and it proved productive as Napoli and Fenerbahçe hit the front in Italy and Turkey while Sporting CP re-established their five-point cushion in Portugal.

Gonzalo Higuaín struck twice as Napoli won 2-1 to replace opponents Internazionale at the top of Serie A. Fenerbahçe also had just enough against ten-man Trabzonspor, a 2-0 win meaning they fully capitalised on Beşiktaş's defeat at home to Akhisar on Sunday to leapfrog their Istanbul rivals at the summit.

Eredivisie pacesetters Ajax experienced no such troubles as they dispatched Zwolle 2-0 to maintain their lead, while a James Milner penalty against Swansea secured Liverpool their third win in four Premier League outings. Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur drew 0-0 with Chelsea, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck twice for a triumphant Dortmund and Lazio were undone by Empoli.

There were six goals at the Stade Vélodrome as Marseille and Monaco got back to domestic matters in a high-scoring draw. Almamy Touré struck twice for Monaco as the principality side twice took the lead away to OM, but the hosts came away with a point thanks to Georges-Kévin N'Koudou's late leveller.

There were plenty more late goals on Monday, most notably at Sporting CP where William Carvalho's 93rd-minute penalty saw off Belenenses to keep the Lions five points clear of the pack in Portugal.
