Liverpool FC captain Steven Gerrard will miss crucial games for club and country after undergoing groin surgery which has ruled him out of action for a month.

Gerrard sustained the injury in last Sunday's 3-1 Premier League victory over Manchester United FC and subsequently sat out the first leg of the Reds' UEFA Europa League round of 16 tie against SC Braga. Kenny Dalglish's side now have to overturn their 1-0 deficit in next Thursday's Anfield return without their talismanic midfielder. The quarter-final matches are scheduled for 7 and 14 April.

Gerrard, 30, will also be unavailable for his country's upcoming UEFA EURO 2012 qualifier. England, second in Group G with seven points from their opening three fixtures, face Wales in Cardiff on 26 March.
