Russian side FC Kuban Krasnodar have signed striker Djibril Cissé on a 12-month contract.

The 31-year-old, who won the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League with Liverpool FC and has scored nine goals in 41 games for France, arrives in Russia with the option of a further 12-month deal if his first year is a success. "Cissé needs no introduction, but it's not just his name he brings to Kuban," explained the club's sporting director Sergei Doronenko. "He is full of ambition and plans for this season. Djibril's main goal is to return to the national team."

Once a trainee at AJ Auxerre, Cissé has played for Olympique de Marseille, Panathinaikos FC, S.S. Lazio and Queens Park Rangers FC, and spent the last six months on loan at Qatari club al-Gharafa SC. Cissé's contract with QPR was cancelled by mutual consent last week. Kuban finished fifth in the Russian league last term and will start this season in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League.
