Bosvelt says farewell to Feyenoord

Feyenoord's former captain Paul Bosvelt has left Rotterdam for Premiership club Manchester City FC.

Two-year contract
The teams agreed an undisclosed transfer fee on Tuesday evening and Bosvelt signed a two-year contract today. It is the second major purchase for Kevin Keegan's City this week, following the arrival of English international winger Trevor Sinclair from West Ham United FC.

Benefit of experience
"The terms have been agreed, he has passed his medical and he is now on a tour of the new stadium," Keegan told his club's website. "The biggest asset he brings is his experience. He is a Dutch international who is excited about the move, about playing in the new stadium and in the Premiership. He is not here for a final pay day."

Key player
The 33-year-old Bosvelt was one of the key players in the Feyenoord team that won the 2002 UEFA Cup. However, he recently relinquished the captaincy at De Kuip following the departure of several team-mates, including Pierre van Hooijdonk.

'Six fantastic years'
"I was hoping for Feyenoord to co-operate in this transfer to Manchester City, and the fact the club did that is confirmation that they really appreciated me," Bosvelt said. "I have had six fantastic years at Feyenoord. I look back at it with a lot of pleasure. We now are separating on good terms and that is what both parties wanted."

Rift denied
Bosvelt also denied rumours of a rift with Feyenoord coach Bert van Marwijk. "Last week several parts of the media reported that I had a problem with the coach. That is absolute nonsense," he told Feyenoord's website.

International appearances
Bosvelt joined Feyenoord from FC Twente in summer 1997 and won the Dutch title with the Rotterdam team in 99. In all, he played 177 league games for Feyenoord, who ironically will play City in a pre-season friendly in Denmark tomorrow. Bosvelt will not take part in that match but will hope to be considered for City's UEFA Cup qualifying round tie against Welsh side TNS Llansantffraid FC in August.
