Double despair for Liverpool

Liverpool FC lost Jamie Carragher and Milan Baroš until the new year after both suffered serious injuries.

Liverpool FC will be without two key players until the new year at the earliest after Jamie Carragher and Milan Baroš both picked up serious injuries in Saturday's 3-1 English Premiership victory against fellow UEFA Cup contenders Blackburn Rovers FC.

Six months out
Carragher, capped nine times by England, broke his leg after a strong tackle by Blackburn's Lucas Neill, who was shown a red card. Liverpool spokesman Ian Cotton said: "The awful news for everyone at the club is that Jamie will be out for up to six months."

Two-hour operation
Baroš, the 21-year-old Czech Republic striker, collapsed with a broken ankle after a legitimate tackle by former Liverpool team-mate Markus Babbel, who is on loan at Blackburn. He underwent a two-hour operation on Saturday night and is expected back in early 2004.
