PSV nonplussed after AIK tie

"Drawing with AIK at home is obviously unacceptable," said PSV Eindhoven's Timothy Derijck after their 1-1 draw, with Nils-Eric Johansson sorry AIK did not "hold out for the win".

It should have been a festive occasion for PSV Eindhoven; their 300th game in UEFA competition and a chance to build on the 3-0 matchday two victory over SSC Napoli against the bottom team in Group F, AIK. Instead, following the 1-1 draw at the PSV Stadion, it was visiting captain Nils-Eric Johansson who was left with a feeling of regret that his side did not take all three points to Sweden. PSV goalscorer Jeremain Lens, meanwhile, admitted that neither he nor his team-mates could "find that extra gear", with defender Timothy Derijck branding the performance "unacceptable".

Even though we went behind, we still didn't really manage to raise our game – we couldn't find that extra gear. Maybe it was to do with the opposition – they dropped deep and slowed the tempo and we got sucked in. It is not that we don't think the UEFA Europa League is important enough – it's a stage on which you can show what you can do and raise your profile, and that means winning games like this. I didn't really mind that I wasn't playing as a centre-forward this evening. I can play on either wing or through the middle. Wherever I am, I try to make something happen.

Drawing against AIK at home is obviously unacceptable. We put them under a lot of pressure but didn't create much, and they scored with one of the few chances they had. They played with five in the middle and we had difficulty finding a way through. People say we're missing Mark van Bommel and Ola Toivonen, but their replacements are also good, otherwise they wouldn't be at PSV. It's true that it may take a while for us to establish a new rhythm, but we should still be winning games like these.

When you look at it objectively, considering who we were playing and where, a point is a good result. On the other hand, we were up 1-0 with ten minutes to go, so we are also disappointed we didn't hold out for the win. It was nice to come here – it's a different kind of pressure than in the domestic competition – but we lost our first two group matches so we knew if we want to progress we had to take something from tonight's game. We're quite a young side in terms of European competition, yet we want to gain experience by getting points – we're not just coming to make up the numbers. Our fans were amazing. They even wanted more tickets than their allocation, and the support they gave us was fantastic.
